The combination of a tight budget and the need for a coffee grinder led me to purchase a Mr Coffee grinder a few months back after having done only a bit of research. This stemmed from the purchase of another coffee bean grinder – a Mr Dudley International coffee grinder model. It’s understandable if you haven’t heard of the brand Mr. Dudley – it was bought by another company several years back which put a stop to the manufacturing of its coffee grinders. The one I purchased is a vintage, manual model made of glass and wood which I thought I could still use. Long story short, I ended up with a piece of coffee grinder memorabilia that is pretty to look at but useless for coffee. Which leads us to my new Mr Coffee coffee grinder.
About Mr. Coffee
Mr Coffee is a newcomer in the beverage equipment industry, but it is slowly gaining a following because of its cheap but functional products that range from coffee and iced tea makers to coffee grinders and related accessories. It currently has four grinder models, namely: IDS55, 57, 59, and 77. The Mr. Coffee IDS77 is the latest, most expensive, and most impressive in the list – and this is what I purchased.
Advantages Of The Mr Coffee Burr Grinder
For less than 30 dollars, the IDS77 is a steal because it is much cheaper compared to other burr grinders. Admittedly, though, I was a bit skeptical of it because of the low price, but truth be told, it worked perfectly fine. Aside from the cost, another advantage of this model is its capacity – it can grind beans that can be used to fix up to twelve cups of coffee! And speaking of ground beans, another great thing about this device is there are three grind settings to choose from: fine, medium, and coarse.
When it comes to ease of use, the Mr. Coffee IDS77 is not the best burr grinder in the market, but it is certainly not the worst. The grind is even and you get what you specified in the grind settings. It is also easy to operate, and the container for the grounds comes off for easier handling and cleaning.
Disadvantages Of The Mr. Coffee Grinder
Given the low price tag, I didn’t expect much from this device, and later on this attitude helped me overcome the flaws it had. One of these is the lack of consistency in the grounds which results from the sticking of fine particles on the top part of the grind chamber. Another disadvantage has something to do with its operation. If you don’t read the Mr Coffee grinder manual before you use the product, you might think that there’s a problem if you can’t turn it on. However, this is just the result of the lid not being properly aligned with the cup.
Should You Purchase It?
If you don’t have the budget for a top-of-the-line coffee grinder, the ones from Mr. Coffee will suffice. Just remember that you only paid a fraction of the cost of more expensive brands for it, so do not expect the same quality in your ground coffee beans.
