Black & Decker NLP1800 Alligator Lopper Cordless Chain Saw Review

Black & Decker NLP1800The Black & Decker NLP1800 Alligator Lopper 18-Volt Cordless Chain Saw: Possibly the Safest, Easiest-to-Use Chainsaw Design on the Market. Imagine a pair of pruning shears that you could use to walk up to a 4-inch diameter tree and lop it off at ground level, just like you were pruning a twig! That’s essentially what you’ll get with the Black & Decker Alligator Lopper.

You’ll also get most of the convenience and utility of a traditional chainsaw, but without much of the risk. The innovative two-handled design of this chainsaw eliminates much of the risk of kickbacks compared to traditional chainsaw designs. And because of the innovative grab-and-cut design, you won’t need to worry about this chainsaw digging into the ground or cutting more than you intended.

No need to awkwardly and precariously try to stabalize what you’re cutting with your foot, either. If you’ve done much chainsaw cutting, you’ve probably been there and done that – and likely don’t care much for it (I sure don’t!).

The Black & Decker Alligator Lopper isn’t intended for heavy-duty cutting. If you need to tackle trees or branches in excess of 4 inches in diameter, you’ll need a chainsaw of traditional design. But if you’ve got some light to medium-duty pruning, tree felling or cleanup to do, this just might be the very best tool for the job.

In Depth Features :

Innovative Grab-And-Cut Clamping Jaws
As you close the jaws of the Alligator Lopper over the object you’re cutting, the jaws grab the wood, draw it into the jaws and cut it. You won’t have to wrestle the saw through the cut. The Alligator Lopper will do the work.

Easy-To-Use Design
You use the Black and Decker lopper just like you would a manual nlp1800 lopper, with an easy two-handed scissors action. You’ll be able to lop off anything up to 4 inches in diameter with ease.

Top Jaw Chain Guard
In the event of a kickback, you’re protected from the critical danger zone of the chain by the Alligator Lopper’s chain guard. As you can probably see in the photos, the entire upper portion of the chain loop is covered with a chain guard. This design feature greatly reduces your risk of incurring an injury should a kickback occur.

Reduced Kickback Guide Bar
The small radius tip of the guide bar reduces your risk of a kickback by reducing the size of the critical kickback zone.

Reduced Kickback Chain
The special design of the chain’s guard links and depth gauges helps prevent wood from being fed into the cutter too quickly. This reduces the likelihood of kickback.

18-Volt Battery Powered
According to Black & Decker, the 18-volt Nicad battery provides alligator lopper enough runtime to make 150 inch and a half diameter cuts on a single charge.

Lightweight Design
The Black & Decker NPP2018 weighs a total of 7.9 pounds including the battery.

Summary of Customer Reviews:

As of this writing, the reviews are extremely positive overall, with an average rating of just slightly less than 5 stars out of 5. Here are some details about what customers liked and disliked about this product:

Pros:

Most customer reviewers loved the utility of the Black & Decker NLP1800 Alligator Lopper Cordless Chain Saw. They liked being able to use the NLP1800 just as they would use hedge clippers or pruning shears. And many were impressed that they didn’t have to hold down or prop up whatever they were working on, as would be necessary with a conventional chainsaw design. Many also liked that you don’t have to worry about getting the chain in the dirt when working low. “SO much easier to use than a regular chain saw” stated one reviewer.

The safety of using the NLP1800 was mentioned very often. Several reviewers noted that they weren’t afraid to let their older kids use this tool. One reviewer stated that the Black & Decker NLP1800 is the “safest power saw I’ve seen.”

Many reviewers loved the obvious advantages offered by this Black & Decker electric chain saw over gas-powered chainsaws. Ease of use, smooth and quiet cutting, no starting issues and nearly zero maintenance requirements were the most frequently mentioned electric vs. gas benefits.

Several reviewers mentioned that the Alligator Lopper chain saw is just plain fun to use! “WOW! What Fun!” exclaimed one reviewer.

Cons:

Many reviewers would like the running time provided by a fully charged battery to be longer. A single charge should provide enough runtime to make 150 inch and a half diameter cuts. Of course, having multiple batteries can eliminate having to wait for a recharge. Be aware, too, that all of Black & Decker’s 18-volt tools use interchangeable batteries. So if you have any other Black & Decker 18-volt tools, you’ll be able to use those batteries with the Alligator Lopper.

Some reviewers complained about the length of time required to recharge the battery. (The charger takes up to 6 hours to recharge a fully depleted battery. Black & Decker NLP1800 Cordless Chain Saw does offer a Fast Charger that will fully charge a battery in 90 minutes or less.)

Several reviewers complained about the lack of a self-oiler (the chain must be oiled with a manual system). And some felt that the manual oiling system is somewhat awkward to use. Oil must be replenished after 10 minutes of cutting.
